Sukin Australian Natural Skincare was launched in 2007 by a Melbourne based family on a mission to provide high quality, affordable and effective natural skin and hair care.
After identifying a gap in the market for attractive, high efficacy and affordable natural skincare, founders Simon and Alison, along with their father Peter, left their full time jobs to begin the Sukin brand.
“We hired an old retail shop in a desolate shopping strip and spent the first year packing boxes, calling on retail stores and high fiving every time an order came through on the fax” explains Alison. “It was a freezing shop so I had to wear two layers of thermals to keep warm. Not the glamorous life in skincare I expected.”
Launching a skincare brand in a very cluttered and competitive market forced the trio to wear multiple hats, and adopt a firm brand positioning from the start. “Skincare that doesn’t cost the earth” is Sukin's tagline which reflects our affordable price positioning and also touches on Sukin’s natural formulations and earth friendly brand ethos,” explains Simon. “These elements have resonated well with our customers.”
Sukin Australian Natural Skincare continue to maintain a strong stance on the environment and sustainability and have been certified as 100% Carbon Neutral, Cruelty Free, and Vegan for many years now, with all formulations being biodegradable and grey water safe in addition.
Today, Sukin Organics are Australia’s best selling natural skin care brand, with a portfolio of lines extending over more than 60 products across face, body and hair, and continuing to grow year on year.
Sukin’s skincare is still Australian made and owned, and is run by a dedicated young team, focused on remaining close to the ground and providing customers with the best natural skincare on the market.
In 2010 Sukin Australian Natuarl Skincare received the Governor of Victoria’s emerging exporter of the year award, and have since expanded their international reach to over 10 countries across the globe.
Sukin know natural products
Sukin Organics have rapidly grown to become Australia’s favourite and best selling natural skincare brand due to the high efficacy, reliability and availability of their products.
Sukin's commitment to natural began with a simple list; what should never be found in your skincare. Sukin Australian Natural Skincare products therefore do not contain a myriad of harsh chemicals used in many products on the market today including sodium lauryl sulphate, sodium laureth sulphate, synthetic fragrances, animal derivatives, harsh detergents, propylene glycol, artificial colours, triethanolamine, mineral oils, EDTA or parabens.
Instead, Sukin Organics products are formulated with high efficacy, high quality botanical extracts and essential oils, carefully selected to bring out the best in your skin and hair.
Sukin choose tried, tested and trusted ingredients for Sukin's products, and always use themselves as a trial panel before a product goes to market.
Sukin know affordable products
At Sukin they believe that high quality, natural products should be available to everyone, meaning Sukin's prices remain realistic and affordable for individuals and families.
Sukin & Sustainability
At Sukin their tagline and focus are simple. Skincare that doesn’t cost the earth™ isn’t merely a commitment to affordable products, but also to the creation of beautiful skincare at minimal cost to our precious environment.
How do Sukin achieve this? By thinking and acting sustainably wherever possible.
This means achieving carbon neutral status by offsetting all of Sukin's emissions from product manufacture to office operations.
Whilst bottles and boxes and packets can certainly be attractive, the less attractive side is that they can end up contributing to land fill. Sukin uses recyclable packaging, and ensures that packaging is kept to a minimum where possible.
Sukin’s ‘no nasties’ approach helps to keep both our bodies and our environment healthy. Without the inclusion of harsh detergents, propylene glycol, sulphates and more, Sukin formulations are grey water safe, so you can feel confident that what you are using is not going to damage our rivers, animals and plant life once it heads down the drain.
Using plant-based ingredients, Sukin Australian Natural Skincare formulations are also biodegradable, avoiding build up and contamination in our waterways. Sukin’s face and body scrubs are free from micro plastic beads, and employ only the best natural and biodegradeable exfoliants.
As a 100% vegan brand, Sukin is committed to creating products that are free from animal testing, animal derivatives, and animal by-products.
As a business, Sukin's overall objective is to work towards sustainable and efficient business practices.
On the issue of palm derived ingredients, the derivatives used in some of Sukin Organics products are used solely as Sukin are currently unable to find any other ingredient that replicates their performance or that when split/fractionated can deliver the same result. Sukin choose not to use the alternative options of animal derivatives.
Sukin Organics pursuit of sustainable business practices is ongoing and Sukin are constantly exploring options.
Sukin & Carbon Neutral
Sukin Organics neutralise their carbon footprint.
For a number of years Sukin has proudly worn the Carbon Neutral logo alongside Sukin's own.
Working closely with the Carbon Reduction Institute of Australia, Sukin have been able to effectively reduce, measure and offset all carbon emissions involved in the operation of business.
For Sukin this includes everything from product manufacture, freight, office operations, and warehouse operations.
The frequent and stringent reporting measures of the CRI allow Sukin to identify those areas of greatest impact to our environment, and seek out strategies for reducing these emissions, alongside purchasing credits for all emissions Sukin Organics are responsible for.
Sukin's aim is to neutralise the negative effect carbon emissions are potentially having on climate change, and in effect, our environment.
To date, Sukin have offset nearly 8000 tonnes of CO2e, which is the equivalent of:
* Taking 3490 cars off the road each year.
* Deducting the emissions of 558 households each year.
Sukin's Project – Sukin’s carbon credits are currently being funnelled into a clean energy biomass project in India.
Due to a rapidly increasing population putting a strain on India’s power resources, extreme amounts of coal burning exacerbates their already troubling issue with air pollution.
Renewable biomass utilises agricultural waste and other non-renewable sources as fuel to generate power, as a cleaner alternative to coal. The use of biomass (biological material derived from organic matter) is less emission intensive, and makes use of a resource that would otherwise be left to decay and emit methane.
To meet current energy demands, biomass boilers are being installed and are utilising locally available agricultural waste, reducing emissions.
This not only has astounding environmental repercussions but contributes also to the welfare of the communities employed in the biomass project.
Sukin has contributed to a whopping $139,000 going to Indian farmers in exchange for biomass to run these boilers.
Sukin & Recycable Packaging
Sukin Make It Easy For You To Recycle.
Sukin uses PET plastic on most full size products. With its plant-based raw material structure, the PET plastic is 100% recyclable. Sukin Organics encourage all Sukin bottles to be recycled, as this process, allowed only through the use of PET plastic, uses less than 30% of the energy in initial production of virgin PET.
Keeping PET in use and demand means that recycling rates remain high, encouraging innovative companies to transform the refined PET recycled flakes into new and sustainable products.
Whilst the plastic pump itself is made of polypropylene, the internal workings of the pump have the usual metal springs. These springs are also recyclable and are separated during the recycling wash process before being sent to various places for re-use.
Sukin uses LDPE tubes. LDPE is recycled and is used to produce a wide range of products such as rubbish bags, floor tiles, panelling, furniture, compost bins, rubbish bins and a large number of other smaller packaging, bottles, lids etc. it has the ability to be recycled and re-processed many times over.
Sukin uses amber glass for its Moisture Restoring Night Cream and Certified Organic Rose Hip Oil products. Glass is recyclable and can be placed in most local recycle streams.
Sukin & No Animal Testing / Vegan
Sukin Look After Our Furry Friends.
Sukin has been dedicated to animal cruelty free practices and products from day one. Sukin source from suppliers who do not test on animals, as well as ensure their own manufacturing and testing processes are completely free from animal testing.
Further to this Sukin is a proud vegan brand, refraining from use of animal derivatives such as lanolin as well as animal by-products like honey and beeswax.
Achieving accreditation with the organisation Choose Cruelty Free (CCF), Sukin are now listed as Vegan and approved as an authorized 100% cruelty free company.
Sukin & Grey Water Safe
Sukin Keep Our Waterways Clean.
In a bid to always remain sustainable, the Sukin Organics range has been formulated to be biodegradeable and grey water safe.
Australians in particular are no strangers to water shortage and drought, and with every drop being precious; many households have taken to using their everyday water run-off (showers, kitchen sink and laundry basin) as water for their plants and gardens.
Because of the gentle, plant based nature of Sukin Organics products, water waste generated after use of Sukin products will not harm or cause build up on your plants and gardens.
Sukin Australian Natural Skincare encourage their customers to save and re-use water wherever they can.
Sukin is committed to producing only the highest standards of natural skin, hair and body care products with utmost efficacy, and Sukin believe this begins with sourcing quality ingredients.
Sukin source only the best including cold-pressed, solvent free oils, essential oils and 100% natural botanical extracts which are of the highest grade, maximising effectiveness and ensuring the purity of Sukin's product.
Sukin preserve their products only where necessary in the interest of human health and protection against contamination. All preservatives are included within recommended usage levels as outlined by the relevant parties in Australia, the US, EU and Japan, and all have long-proven safety records.
