Miessence

Miessence Nature Knows BestThe Miessence Product Story

While completing a Bachelor of Applied Science in Information Management in 1992, a friend introduced Narelle Chenery to a new natural skin care range on the market. The company promoted itself as producing the “best products from science and nature.”

They boasted about the purity of their ingredients, but diminished the numerous chemical contents; in fact, they denied having any ‘unnatural’ ingredients at all! Even though the products contained ingredients she couldn't pronounce, (and because these were termed “natural ingredients” from coconut and palm), Narelle just presumed they were natural and safe to use.

As a young mother, Narelle was looking for a genuine organic alternative. She started Miessence.

Soon after she began promoting this “natural” range to her friends and family, a cosmetic ingredient dictionary caught her attention whilst browsing through a health food store, enlightening her about the dangers of the ingredients she was using. Disillusioned and angry at having been duped by such unethical marketing tactics, her passionate search for truly natural products began.

After expressing her frustration at the ethics of the company she had just left, a family member gave her some books on aromatherapy, herbal remedies, and recipes for natural skin care products. Surprisingly, even these books recommended toxic preservatives, so Narelle started experimenting with her own methods and created her first skin creams (which she gave away as gifts).

As her research deepened, she was captivated by the many wonderful offerings of Mother Nature, and grew more concerned about the poisonous ingredients that most cosmetics contained. She was inspired to tell others about her findings, and had articles published in several well-respected natural health magazines. The response was so positive that Narelle soon realised she was on to a winner, and this fuelled her passion even more!

As a young mother pregnant with her third child, Narelle’s kitchen hobby soon grew into a vibrant home-based business. As her children grew, so did the demand for her products, and Narelle juggled nappies, school lunches, making products and product orders.

A year and a half later while showing her wares at a natural products expo, Narelle was approached by entrepreneur Alf Orpen. Impressed with her knowledge and dedication, Alf challenged her to create a fully certified organic skin-care range. Narelle had been eating organic food since her first pregnancy in 1994, and believed wholeheartedly in the organic philosophy. She was up for the challenge!

Industry colleagues and critics said it couldn’t be done…that especially organic ingredients would spoil if not preserved with chemicals. Narelle trusted her intuition and persevered. After eighteen months of intense research and development, and a generous development grant from the government, Miessence became the world’s first certified organic skin-care and cosmetic range. Startling the multi-billion dollar natural cosmetics industry, her product range was third-party tested under flawless scrutiny, and awarded organic certification in January 2001.

Narelle’s passion, however, was just beginning to gain expression. Her desire was to help level the playing field between multi-national companies with big marketing budgets, and the uninformed consumer. Her intention was to create not only an entire range of certified organic lifestyle products (including skin-care and cosmetics, health supplements, household products), but also to empower consumers with information and awareness of what is available, and what is best for health and wellbeing. In short, Narelle envisioned offering products that would revolutionise the health and beauty industry!

“Once consumers realise that health and beauty are inextricably linked, they will have to seriously question those unpronounceable ingredients in their 'beauty' products. We, as consumers, are incredibly powerful. Most of the time we just don’t realise it!" she says.

"The traditional cosmetics industry alone is worth something over US$20 billion a year, and that’s because of the millions of unaware consumers believing slick marketing messages. Most of this turnover supports the production and use of toxic chemicals, which affects not only our personal health, but the health of our planet!

"If we withdraw our support of the toxic beauty industry, they will have no choice but to make radical changes to maintain market-share. That’s how powerful we are!”

Miessence Organic Certified Skin CareMiessence is an authentically natural alternative range of skin care, hair care, nutritional, home and body products, using certified organic ingredients
Narelle has never been shy in her criticism of those that knowingly (one would presume) poison our bodies and our environment for personal gain. She sites a famous Ghandi quote that “non-cooperation with evil is a sacred duty”

…Though evil is perhaps too strong a word, we must become very aware of the negative impact of greed, manipulation and flagrant disregard for our individual, collective and planetary health. As our species evolves, clearly sustainability must be a cornerstone for all commercial endeavours.

"The nauseating stream of candy-coated offerings that engulf us on a daily basis, from hype-driven tabloids and women’s magazines, manipulative commercials and unconscious television shows, need not be overwhelming or depressing!" says Narelle.

We simply need to see through the pull of big-business propaganda, and follow our own intuition, just as Narelle did! If we commit to educating ourselves about the facts and falsities of 'natural' consumer products, then act responsibly based upon that new knowledge, our own lives and those of our family, friends, community and world will reflect our deeper wisdom.

What is Organic Miessence Certified Organic cares for the environment

Certified Organic products are grown and processed without the use of synthetic chemicals, fertilisers, or Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO).

Rediscovered by Western countries in the 1940s, organic farming is an innovative method of farming and production that is increasingly being recognised as being on the leading edge of food and fibre technology.

Organics is not just chemical free agriculture. It is about the way the product ingredients have been grown, prepared, processed and packaged.

Standards to achieve certification are internationally recognised and are assured through annual audits of all certified operators by an independent third party auditor.

Miessence is founded on the principle that only organic is good enough for our bodies and our planet.

Many companies highlight natural ingredients, but to be sure that you are using truly organic products, look to see if the manufacturer can prove that it is certified organic.

Miessence is the first nutritional, health and well-being company in the world to offer an extensive range of internationally certified organic products.

Miessence: home to probiotic, antioxidant and green alkalising certified organic superfood nutrition.

What is a GMO?

A genetically modified organism (GMO) is a plant, animal or microorganism whose genetic code has been altered (subtracted from, or added to either the same species or a different species) in order to give it characteristics that it does not have naturally.

Scientists can now transfer genes between species that otherwise would be incapable of mating, for example, a goat and a spider. This is what we call transgenesis.

Little is known about the long-term effects of these manipulations on humans, plants, animals and/or the environment. And while some see GMOs as the way to the future, others believe that scientists have gone too far, tinkering with the essence of life.

Why Is Certified Organic Important?

The only way customers can be assured that they are purchasing genuine organic products, free of synthetic chemicals and GMOs, is to purchase products which have been organically certified with a leading independent certifying body such as:

ACO (Australian Certified Organic)
USDA(US Department of Agriculture)
BFA (Biological Farmers of Australia)
IFOAM (International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements)

Miessence Made FreshFive Benefits of Choosing Certified Organic:

1. Good for the soil.

Organic systems rely on a modern and scientific understanding of ecology and soil science, while also depending on traditional methods of crop rotations to ensure fertility and weed and pest control.

2. Good for the environment.

Organic systems aim to reduce dependence on non-renewable resources. Organic production aims at all times towards sustainability whilst having best management of the environment and wildlife as a priority.

3. Good for people.

Organic based ingredients have been shown in a number of studies to contain more vitamins, nutrients and cancer-fighting antioxidants than non-organic ingredients.

4. No synthetic chemicals.

Organic systems prohibit the use of artificial chemicals, pesticides and fertilisers.

5. No GMOs.

Certified Organic products are produced without GMOs, which are prohibited in the standards for organic food and farming.

Miessence Certification

Personal care products are not required to comply to the same stringent labelling standards that govern organic foods, so it's easy for some companies to label their products 'organic'.

But once you look at the ingredients, some 'organic' products are a far cry from being truly organic, healthy or environmentally friendly at all!

For example, water is the primary ingredient in many cosmetics, so some manufacturers use 'organic aqueous infusions' (just very watered down teas) to mislead customers into thinking they're organic, while still using the same synthetic toxic ingredients that would NEVER be allowed in organic food products.

This greenwashing has the potential to destroy consumer confidence in organic products.

To give you confidence, all Miessence products undergo internal quality control processes which are then all certified organic by international independent bodies.

Miessence products fall into one of three organic categories:

Certified Organic (food grade)
Certified Organic (cosmetic)
Made With Certfied Organic Ingredients - Registered Products

Miessence Biopure Natural Hosusehold CleanerThe difference between these three categories is explained below:

Certified Organic Products
Miessence certified organic products contain more than 95% certified organic ingredients. The remaining small percentage (up to 5%) must be naturally produced plant or mineral products with strict processing criteria, (e.g. absolutely no GMOs or synthetic chemicals).

Australian Certified Organic
Certification of compliance Products bearing the ACO logo (Australian Certified Organic) meet all of the requirements above. ACO is Australia's largest certifier for organic and biodynamic produce and has over 1500 operators within its certification system.

International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movement
Certification of compliance. Products bearing the ACO/IFOAM logo (International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements) meet all of the requirements of ACO certification in addition to the standards set by IFOAM. IFOAM is the worldwide umbrella organisation for the organic movement, uniting more than 750 member organisations in 108 countries.

US Department of Agriculture
Certification of compliance. Products bearing the USDA logo (United States Department of Agriculture) meet all of the requirements of standards of the USDA National Organic Program (NOP). The USDA National Organic Program accredits private businesses, organisations, and state agencies to certify producers and handlers of agricultural products according to NOP regulations.

Certified Organic (Cosmetic) - Made with certified organic ingredients
Australian Certified Organic Cosmetic. Miessence organic cosmetic products contain more than 70% certified organic ingredients. The remaining percentage (up to 30%) must be naturally produced plant or mineral products with strict processing criteria, (e.g. absolutely no GMOs or synthetic chemicals) or products of green chemistry. These products bear the Organic Cosmetic logo.

Registered products BFA registered product
Certification of compliance. Miessence registered products are mineral-based products with a small percentage of organic ingredients. These are non-agricultural substances (e.g., clay, bicarb soda, minerals), that are subject to strict processing criteria (e.g. absolutely no GMOs or synthetic chemicals). These products otherwise are natural, conform to the general stipulations of the organic standards of the world and are deemed the “best in their class”.

Miessence Leadership Miessence embraces the leadership role in sustainable enterprise

Miessence leads by example.

Miessence commitment in enterprise is to create a platform that benefits people and benefits the environment through a long term vision to set the benchmark and be the model for other businesses.

This is how Miessence shows leadership:

Leadership in Certified Organics
Leadership in Product Development
Leadership in Sustainable Practices
Leadership with People
Leadership in Animal Welfare
Miessence Vegan Products
Miessence & Gluten Free
Sustainable Palm Oil Harvesting

Only products that are independently certified organic can truly claim to be 'organic' and genuinely good for us.

The benefits of certified organic products go much further than the products themselves.

This approach effectively removes chemicals from the agricultural practices of growing their ingredients, as well as removing the manufacture of synthetic chemicals, and their by-products, that would otherwise go into equivalent conventional commercial products.

In addition, it removes chemical exposure of the Miessence customers when using these products and of the environment when some of these products are washed down drains or disposed of, after use.

In promoting product integrity, Miessence not only uses organic ingredients wherever it is available and possible, but Miessence also meet organic food standards. Miessence continue to support this high standard at a time where other companies are just beginning to attempt this and are lobbying for broader and lower standards for non-food products such as skin care.

Miessence carries out its own research before appointing suppliers. In addition to verifying any claimed certified organic status, Miessence examines the reputation, quality of the growing environment and harvesting process of all suppliers and selects only the ones with demonstrably the purest, most potent and freshest ingredients for inclusion in the Miessence products.

Miessence Complete ProteinLeadership in Product Development

To claim the Miessence products are certified organic, Miessence ensures that its ingredients meet certified organic standards. This means raw ingredients are chemical and pesticide free which means our customers are not absorbing or ingesting these chemicals.

Miessence ingredients are treated with respect during the production process – Miessence do not add chemicals and we do not heat treat – to ensure that their 100% active ingredients remain 100% potent.

To meet the demand for an even wider variety of certified organic products, Miessence is constantly developing new lines with the same thorough attention to detail that has made the Miessence current range international favourites.

Leadership in Sustainable Practices

Miessence is proud to be carbon negative. This means that Miessence offset more carbon dioxide than they emit in their supply, manufacturing, distribution and promotion activities. In addition to offsetting all of Miessence operations and deliveries, Miessence has been Gold Certified by Greenbizcheck for sustainable business practices which include efficient options for office and IT equipment, power and paper usage, and resource saving strategies that result in measurable emission reductions.

Miessence packaging is also non-toxic, non-leaching, recyclable and/or biodegradable.

Being certified organic means the Miessence products are sustainably sourced from farmers who are also certified organic.

Certified products not only promote organic farming, health and public awareness of environmental ethics, they also create a more sustainable supply chain.

For a product to be organic, there are conditions from the grower all the way through transportation, processing and packaging, so that all stakeholders in this supply chain make a business of becoming more green.

All Miessence suppliers must meet international organic standards. In the case of Miessence we are the processor and distributor of their products and continue to find ways to make all aspects of the Miessence business practices greener.

Leadership with People

Miessence is about supporting people, from farmers and indigenous communities in developing countries through their supply of Miessence organic fair trade ingredients to more direct involvement in various community and charity events.

Here is an example of how Miessence makes a difference in the lives of people.

Pampering in war-torn Uganda

Uganda has endured the scourge of civil war and the deadly AIDS epidemic.

Approximately 2 million children in Uganda have been orphaned by these calamities. Currently there are 880,000 Ugandan children living as orphans as a result of AIDS ...and Watoto Childcare Ministries is reaching out to help.

Watoto was created to provide holistic, residential care for orphaned and vulnerable children with the core vision to rescue a Child, raise a Leader and rebuild a Nation.

Miessence Executive, Terri Rowe, helped facilitate a program to provide skills, medicine and pampering to women in war-torn Uganda. Miessence donated a variety of Miessence products to Watoto on their recent trip to pamper the house mothers of Watoto Orphan Villages. Narda Bradshaw from Watoto Child Care Ministries wrote the following letter to Terri:...

Dear Terri

Thank you for all of the products that your company graciously donated.

My team of 19 ladies ministered to 3 different groups during our 2 weeks in Uganda. The first 60 were a small part of the Living Hope ministry in Kampala. These women are HIV+ and are being sponsored by Australian women to help in the purchase of anti retroviral drugs.

These women attend meetings every month to help build self esteem, morale, confidence and purpose in God's world. We spent 4 days sharing sewing skills of children's clothing and home furnishings and craft skills of card making and cross stitch and jewellery making.

Our final day was a day of pampering. My team divided into 4 groups for pedicure manicure, facial and shoulder and back massage. The second group of 80 were also part of this ministry but located in Northern Uganda in Gulu; 95% of these women are returnees from the war with the LRA.

They have seen and experienced so many atrocities but welcomed us to pamper them. We were amazed how they received our gesture of love and acceptance. Many may never have known physical touch in a loving and gentle way. It was a wonderful time not only for them but for my team also. All of us were truly blessed.

The third group we pampered were the Watoto village mothers. We spread this over 2 days so we could bless all 210 mothers. These women truly play an amazing role each mothering up to 8 children. It was a privilege to pamper and encourage them and to esteem their womanhood. Overall, in four days we pampered 315 women. Thank you for your generous contribution. We were able to leave resources for their future use. Each of us were privileged to be hands of blessings. May God richly bless you.

Leadership in Animal Welfare

Miessence's commitment to the environment and animal welfare runs to the very heart of what Miessence does – create beautiful, effective certified organic products that benefit the environment as well as people.

Miessence take a holistic approach to animal welfare, starting with the point of origin of their ingredients.

Miesence independently certified organic status means Miessence products are free from Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) that potentially disrupt the natural ecosystem and which may harm insects, animals and people.

Miessence ingredients are free from synthetic chemical pesticides which have been proven hazardous to animals and people.

Certified organic farming practices require a percentage of land be dedicated to natural vegetation which is home and a food source for native fauna.

When they formulate Miessence products, Miessence use natural ingredients with an ancient and proven history. The potency of our ingredients is naturally, not chemically, extracted so there is never a risk of contaminants getting into the environment to harm wildlife.

Furthermore, Miessence are certified to organic food standards which means that their products are good enough to eat, so there is never any need to test on animals. Miessence test new products on themselves before we bring them to market.

Miessence's commitment to animal welfare has been recognised internationally by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals and we are on their list of companies that are cruelty free (as the Miessence parent company ONEGroup).

This commitment to animal welfare and using safe ingredients is also recognised by the Environmental Working Group's comprehensive database of the cosmetic industry called Skin Deep.

Care for animals should be more than a feel good slogan and a pretty logo on a bottle but rather a tangible and verifiable commitment to the whole environment that supports all life – both plant, animal and human.

Using Miessence is your assurance that products you purchase are better than cruelty free – they actively help sustain and preserve the environment in which animals live.

Miessence Vegan Products

Some of our customers choose to live a vegan lifestyle and we're delighted to answer some of their questions:

Q: What is the lecithin source in the Nourishing Hand Cream (is it animal lecithin or plant lecithin?)

A: It is a plant-based lecithin.

Q: What is the origin of the sclertium rolfsii gum in the Clarifying Hair Rinse?

A: Sclertium rolfsii is a naturally occurring bacteria.

Q: Why does Miessence use beeswax in several of its products including Jaffa Lip Balm and Reflect Outdoor Balm?

A: The alternative to beeswax is carnauba wax. Miessence is strongly committed to using certified organic products.

Organic carnauba wax cannot provide the consistency required for the Miessence lip balm, lip crème and concealer formulations.

With the exception of the products which include beeswax as an ingredient, all Miessence products are vegan.

A statement from Miessence's supplier of certified organic beeswax

"Our bees gather honey from nearby organic eucalyptus forests. As honey is the bees food, we only take surplus honey. We leave as much as we can to keep our bees happy and healthy. The wax is the protective cap of the hives, which keeps the honey nice and fresh. When we harvest, we take the wax cap off the hive, pull out the comb, and drain off the excess. The bees are not hurt in any way. The comb is then put back in the hive."

Miessence & Gluten Free

Miessence customers who are gluten-intolerant, or who have friends and family who are gluten intolerant, might have some questions about Miessence products. We're delighted to answer them here:

Q: Does Miessence have gluten free products?

Yes, we certainly do. In fact the vast majority of the Miessence products are 100% gluten free. The only 2 products that contain gluten (from wheat) are the InLiven Probiotic Superfood and the Probiotic Skin Brightener. & the Miessence FastTract Probiotic is Gluten Free.

Q: If I am gluten intolerant can I still use the Probiotic Skin Brightener?

According to doctors, gluten allergies are triggered by ingesting products that contain gluten. When using skin products that contain wheat, they recommend avoiding the lips and mouth.

Q: What about wheat grass?

Wheat grass is an ingredient in Miessence DeepGreen Superfood. It is gluten free.

The gluten protein originates in the grain of sprouted wheat. It is not found in wheat grass.

Sustainable Palm Oil Harvesting

Miessence are proud to let their customers know that the vast majority of our product line is 100% palm oil free (70 out of 75 products).

However Miessence use 3 ingredients that are manufactured using an RSPO palm oil derivative.

These ingredients are:sorbitan olivate /cetearyl olivate (an emulsifier) and, coco & lauryl glucosides (surfactants).

The products that contain these ingredients that are:

Miessence Shine Herbal Hair Conditioner
Miessence Sunflower Bodywash
Miessence Desert Flower Shampoo
Miessence Lemon Myrtle Shampoo
Miessence Biodegradable Dishwashing Concentrate

Miessence have identified an alternative to the sorbtain olivate / cetearyl olivate and are in the process of testing it. If it proves to be successful, Miessence will reformulate the Miessence Shine Herbal Hair Conditioner.

Miessence are yet to identify a suitable surfactant alternative for the other products, but will continue to search for an appropriate palm-free raw material.

Sustainability

Miessence takes its responsibility to the planet seriously.

That's why their commitment to sustainable business practices goes beyond sourcing the world's finest certified organic products. The Miessence commitment infuses everything they do, from manufacturing, packing, transportation and promotion.

TEA causes allergic reactions including eye problems, dryness of hair and skin, and could be toxic if absorbed into the body over a long period of time.

These chemicals are already restricted in Europe due to known carcinogenic effects. Dr. Samuel Epstein (Professor of Environmental Health at the University of Illinois) says that repeated skin applications... of DEA-based detergents resulted in a major increase in the incidence of liver and kidney cancer.

See Nitrosating agents

Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen (causes cancer). Causes allergic, irritant and contact dermatitis, headaches and chronic fatigue. The vapour is extremely irritating to the eyes, nose and throat (mucous membranes).

See Nitrosating agents

29. Fragrance

Fragrance on a label can indicate the presence of up to four thousand separate ingredients, many toxic or carcinogenic. Symptoms reported to the USA FDA include headaches, dizziness, allergic rashes, skin discoloration, violent coughing and vomiting, and skin irritation. Clinical observation proves fragrances can affect the central nervous system, causing depression, hyperactivity, and irritability.

Slows down skin function and cell development, resulting in premature aging. Used in many products (baby oil is 100% mineral oil!) Any mineral oil derivative can be contaminated with cancer causing PAH's (Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons). Manufacturers use petrolatum because it is unbelievably cheap.

You can find mineral oil under the following names:

Mineral oil
Liquidum paraffinum (also known as posh mineral oil!)
Paraffin oil
Paraffin wax
Petrolatum

40. Nitrosating Agents

The following chemicals can cause nitrosamine contamination, which have been determined to form cancer in laboratory animals. There are wide and repeated concerns in the USA and Europe about the contamination of cosmetics products with nitrosamines:

2-bromo-2-nitropropane-1,3-diol
Cocoyl Sarcosine
DEA compounds
Imidazolidinyl Urea
Formaldehyde
Hydrolysed Animal Protein
Lauryl Sarcosine

42. Paraffin wax/oil

Paraffin Wax is mineral oil wax. See Mineral Oil

43. Polyethylene Glycol (PEG) compounds

Potentially carcinogenic petroleum ingredient that can alter and reduce the skin's natural moisture factor. This could increase the appearance of ageing and leave you more vulnerable to bacteria. Used in cleansers to dissolve oil and grease. It adjusts the melting point and thickens products. Also used in caustic spray-on oven cleaners.

See Ethoxylated surfactants

44. Potassium Coco Hydrolysed Collagen

See Anionic Surfactants

45. Propylene/Butylene Glycol

Propylene glycol (PG) is a petroleum derivative. It penetrates the skin and can weaken protein and cellular structure. Commonly used to make extracts from herbs. PG is strong enough to remove barnacles from boats! The EPA considers PG so toxic that it requires workers to wear protective gloves, clothing and goggles and to dispose of any PG solutions by burying them in the ground. Because PG penetrates the skin so quickly, the EPA warns against skin contact to prevent consequences such as brain, liver, and kidney abnormalities. But there isn't even a warning label on products such as stick deodorants, where the concentration is greater than in most industrial applications.

From Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS):

Health Hazard Acute And Chronic

INHALATION: May cause respiratory and throat Irritation, central nervous system depression, blood and kidney disorders. May cause Nystagmus, Lymphocytosis.

SKIN: Irritation and dermatitis, absorption.

EYES: Irritation and conjunctivitis.

INGESTION: Pulmonary oedema, brain damage, hypoglycaemia, intravascular hemolysis. Death may occur.

46. PVP/VA Copolymer

47. Quaternium-7, 15, 31, 60, etc

Toxic, causes skin rashes and allergic reactions.

See Nitrosating agents

From Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS):

SKIN: PROLONGED OR REPEATED EXPOSURE MAY CAUSE SKIN IRRITATION. MAY CAUSE MORE SEVERE RESPONSE IF SKIN IS DAMP.

MAY BE A WEAK SKIN SENSITIZER IN SUSCEPTIBLE INDIVIDUALS AT GREATER THAN 1% IN AQUEOUS SOLUTION.

48. Rancid Natural Emollients

Natural oils used in cosmetics should be cold pressed. The refined vegetable oils found on supermarket shelves and many health food stores which lack colour, odour and taste are devoid of nutrients, essential fatty acids, vitamins and unsaponifiables - all valuable skin conditioning agents! They also contain poisonous "trans" fatty acids as a result of the refining process.

Another important factor to consider with creams made from plant oil is the use-by date. The most beneficial plant oils (like rosehip, borage and evening primrose oils) are polyunsaturated, which means they oxidise and go rancid fairly quickly (about 6 months). Most off-the-shelf cosmetics have a shelf life of three years. Rancid oils are harmful, they form free-radicals, which damage and age your skin.

49. Silicone derived emollients

Silicone emollients are occlusive - that is they coat the skin, trapping anything beneath it, and do not allow the skin to breathe (much like plastic wrap would do.)

Recent studies have indicated that prolonged exposure of the skin to sweat, by occlusion, causes skin irritation. Some synthetic emollients are known tumour promoters and accumulate in the liver and lymph nodes. They are also non-biodegradable, causing negative environmental impact.

You will find silicone emollients under the following names:

Dimethicone
Dimethicone Copolyol
Cyclomethicone

See Anionic Surfactants

53. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate (ALS)

Used in car washes, garage floor cleaners and engine degreasers - and in 90% of products that foam.

Animals exposed to SLS and ALS experience eye damage, central nervous system depression, laboured breathing, diarrhoea, severe skin irritation, and even death.

Young eyes may not develop properly if exposed to SLS and ALS because proteins are dissolved. SLS and ALS may also damage the skin's immune system by causing layers to separate and inflame. It is frequently disguised in semi-natural cosmetics with the explanation "comes from coconut".

See Nitrosating agents
