About Organic Cotton...
Conventional cotton & chemicals: Cotton has been cultivated totally organic for over 4,000 years of human history. It was only mid 20th century when the widespread use of pesticides and chemical fertilisers began.
Today, it is said that conventional cotton production uses approximately a quarter of the world’s agricultural insecticide production. Without doubt, conventional cotton production is one of the heaviest consumers of toxic chemicals.
What is organic cotton? Organic cotton is raw cotton that is produced by farms where no synthetic chemical pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers have been used for at least three years.
Instead of using agricultural pesticides, beneficial organisms such as parasites and natural enemies (such as ladybirds against aphids) are used for insect management. No toxic chemicals are used in processing and manufacturing of our organic cotton products.
In summary, organic cotton is a clean, sustainable alternative to conventional cotton.
What is good about organic cotton? By using organic cotton, you are not exposed to toxic chemicals residues that may appear in conventional cotton products. At the same time we are making small contribution to the protection of the environment that we all live in.
As the organic cotton yarns are less processed, they keep the highest level of durability and natural softness that give you great comfort.
Certified cotton? Cotton is only ‘organic’ when it has been properly certified by an organic certification body that verifies that the producer meets or exceeds defined organic standards.
The Organic Towel Company towels are certified by IMO, the Swiss based accredited agency for inspection and certification of organic and sustainable production. The organic cotton producers we use are inspected by IMO regularly and this ensures our towels are produced by adhering to the strict EU regulation and standards on organic and ethical production.
What about dyes? All dyes used on The Organic Towel Company products are environmentally responsible ‘low impact’ dyes, which are selected for the lowest environmental impact and of course fully compliant with the organic certification criteria. These dyes use much less water and energy than conventional dyes, and do not contain any heavy metal or harmful chemical substances. >>>The IMO Caring for your Organic Cotton Towels... Washing Always wash before your first use. Machine or hand wash in warm water (maximum 60 degrees). Wash separate from dark colour fabric or clothes with a fastener to avoid damaging the cotton yarns. Use the detergent without bleach or optical brightening agents. Refrain from continuous or excessive use of fabric softener/conditioner, which will leave a fine coating on the cotton fibres and may affect the absorbency.
Drying Tumble dry at low temperature, or If drying by hanging, shake the towel while still wet and after drying. It will make your towels soft and fluffy with cotton piles standing up again. Avoid hanging under a direct strong sunlight. We do not recommend ironing towels.
General (Absorbency): Healthy organic cotton is naturally a bit waxy, so it may take some washes before maximising its absorbency. (Shrinkage): Organic cotton towels may shrink a little as no shrinkage-proof chemicals are applied. To minimise possible shrinkage, please do not tumble dry at high temperature. (Tiny specks): As no bleach is used, you may occasionally find some very tiny specks in fabric. They will become less visible with each wash.
